The United States government announced on Thursday that it has successfully negotiated the release of 135 Nicaraguan political prisoners. The detainees will initially be sent to Guatemala.
According to National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, the release was secured on humanitarian grounds. 'No one should be put in jail for peacefully exercising their fundamental rights of free expression, association, and practicing their religion,' he stated.
Among the individuals released are members of a Texas-based religious charity, Catholic laypeople, students, and other political detainees. Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo has agreed to host the Nicaraguans temporarily while they apply for entry into the United States.
