The Centre has stepped up its response to the ongoing flood crisis in Andhra Pradesh. A central team of experts, led by the Additional Secretary for Disaster Management at the Ministry of Home Affairs, has been commissioned to assess the situation on the ground and suggest immediate relief measures, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Wednesday.

So far, 20 people have lost their lives due to the incessant rains and resultant flooding that has wreaked havoc, particularly in Vijayawada. In a statement on social media platform 'X', Shah indicated that the Modi government is closely watching the unfolding situation.

The flood's aftermath has been catastrophic, affecting 6.44 lakh people and necessitating the establishment of 193 relief camps accommodating over 42,000 displaced persons. Local authorities have also identified nearly 64,000 families in seven districts for the distribution of essential items. Additionally, the agricultural sector has suffered extensive losses, with thousands of acres of paddy fields submerged and significant damage to both agricultural and horticultural crops.
