Former Lebanese Central Bank Chief Detained Over Financial Crimes
Ex-Lebanese central bank chief Riad Salameh has been detained on allegations tied to financial crimes. He faces questioning before a judge decides on further detention. Salameh, who governed the bank for 30 years, has been accused of illicit enrichment totaling over $110 million. He denies all charges.
Riad Salameh, the former Lebanese central bank chief, was taken into custody on Tuesday due to allegations of financial crimes. Authorities have confirmed that he will remain detained until a scheduled hearing, which is likely to take place next week.
The presiding judge, after interrogation, will determine whether Salameh should remain in detention. The 73-year-old Salameh, who served as the bank governor for three decades, faces charges of illicit enrichment involving public funds in Lebanon and multiple Western countries.
Specifically, allegations have surfaced that Salameh amassed over $110 million through financial crimes involving Optimum Invest, a Lebanese firm specializing in income brokerage services. Both Salameh and his lawyer have refrained from commenting, though Salameh has previously denied all allegations.
