The U.S. Embassy and the Izmir governor's office confirmed that 15 assailants were detained following the incident. The attack took place in Izmir's Konak district, with the marines dressed in civilian clothes.
The incident escalated when five U.S. personnel joined in, prompting police intervention. A White House spokesperson expressed concerns over the assault but appreciated the Turkish police's quick response and accountability measures.
The U.S. Embassy confirmed that the Marines, from the USS Wasp, were safe. Tensions between the U.S. and Turkey have been high over issues including U.S. alliances and military purchases, although relations have reportedly improved recently.
