At least 129 inmates lost their lives during an attempted escape from Makala Prison in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, early on Monday morning, government officials reported.

In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, Interior Minister Shabani Lukoo confirmed a fire had also erupted, damaging the jail's administrative building, food depots, and a hospital. The incident resulted in 59 injuries.

A prison official stated that no prisoners succeeded in escaping and that those who attempted were killed. The government is conducting an investigation into the incident, which occurred around 2:00 a.m. local time on Monday, amid sounds of heavy gunfire and chaotic activity reported by prisoners.
