Dozens of excited Indonesians waved on Tuesday as a motorcade carried Pope Francis through the capital, marking the start of an ambitious Asia-Pacific tour set to emphasize global climate change action. The 87-year-old pontiff's longest trip yet includes stops in East Timor, Singapore, and Papua New Guinea over the next 10 days.

Upon landing at Jakarta airport in a wheelchair, Francis was greeted with a bouquet from two children in traditional clothes before meeting Indonesia's religious affairs minister, Vatican envoy, and bishops. As his motorcade proceeded to the Vatican embassy, small, excited crowds waved eagerly.

'I'm so happy, I feel so blessed,' said Enny Rahail, who traveled 3,000 km from southeast Maluku to wave at the pope. The pontiff, an advocate for peace, also met informally with refugees in Indonesia shortly after arriving. Over the next 12 days, he will cover nearly 33,000 km before returning to Rome.

Francis wired customary greetings to countries overflown en route to Indonesia and is expected to address Indonesia's political leaders and participate in an inter-religious meeting at Istiqlal Mosque. As a proponent of the 2015 Paris climate pact, he will continue urging action against climate change in Jakarta, a city grappling with chronic flooding and land sinking. 'This is a very historic visit,' said Indonesian President Joko Widodo, welcoming Francis warmly.
