Senior Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi has criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for a secular civil code, labeling it 'jumlebazi.' Singhvi asserted that attempts are being made to impose such concepts for political gain, especially during election times.
Singhvi, recently elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Telangana, emphasized that while there is nothing wrong with the concept itself, it needs to be implemented through consensus. He questioned the feasibility of a Uniform Civil Code being applied inconsistently across different states.
Addressing the complexity of implementing a uniform code, Singhvi stressed the necessity for coordination among various communities. He accused the BJP of using these political moves to create divisive issues before elections. His remarks followed Modi's Independence Day speech, where the Prime Minister highlighted the need for a secular civil code, criticizing the existing laws as discriminatory.
