In a significant move to improve labour market governance in Jordan, the Jordanian Ministry of Labour, in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the German development agency GIZ, recently conducted a four-day capacity-building workshop focused on the Labour Market Information System (LMIS). This workshop, aimed at government personnel, marked the initial phase of LMIS installation in the country.

The LMIS is designed to provide critical information and analysis to policymakers and other stakeholders, enabling evidence-based decision-making and effective monitoring of employment and labour policies. The workshop brought together data managers, statisticians, and IT specialists from various government entities, including the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Education, the Social Security Corporation, and the Technical and Vocational Skills Development Commission.

Participants were trained on the data preparation and upload processes essential for the LMIS, which is scheduled to launch in 2025. The workshop also focused on assessing the data model to ensure it is ready for the system's implementation phase.

The collaboration between the ILO and the Jordanian Ministry of Labour on the LMIS began in 2023, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This MOU outlined the ILO's role in providing technical support for the system's implementation. Since then, a comprehensive roadmap and master plan have been developed, detailing the indicators for the first phase of data dissemination. These indicators are aligned with the Decent Work Indicators framework and other relevant data sources.

The LMIS is expected to play a pivotal role in facilitating the exchange of information and coordinating activities among various labour market stakeholders, including statistical agencies, research institutions, and organizations involved in policy formulation and implementation. By providing accurate and timely data, the LMIS will help in crafting relevant labour market policies and programs, as well as in monitoring and reporting on the effectiveness of employment and labour policies.
