President Droupadi Murmu called for major reforms in the judiciary on Sunday, stressing the need to eliminate delays in verdicts for heinous crimes such as rape, which erode public trust in the judicial system.

Speaking at the National Conference of District Judiciary, Murmu highlighted the persistent backlog of cases as a significant challenge and called for special Lok Adalat weeks to expedite these cases. She also emphasized the need for a cultural shift away from frequent adjournments in court proceedings.

The President pointed out that the judicial process remains daunting for poorer citizens, who face significant mental and financial stress when engaging with the court system. Murmu proposed several measures, including justice delivery in local languages and improving the infrastructure and resources at the district court level, to address these issues.
