A 46-year-old man has been apprehended in connection with the rape and murder of a nine-year-old tribal girl in Odisha's Balasore district, police confirmed on Sunday. The incident has caused widespread outrage and demands for justice.

According to Remuna police in-charge Hasina Kulu, the girl was reported missing from her home on August 27. Her decomposed body was discovered in an abandoned house on August 30. Accused Rabi Singh, a friend of the victim's father, was taken into custody on Saturday and charged under multiple sections related to rape and murder.

Following Singh's arrest, BJD president and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik criticized the current government's handling of crime in the assembly. BJD spokesperson Lekhashree Samantasinghar also voiced strong condemnation of the BJP government, labeling it 'anti-women,' 'anti-children,' and 'anti-tribal,' while demanding Rs 10 lakh compensation for the victim's family.
