On Sunday, Kolkata will witness numerous rallies and demonstrations demanding justice for the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar hospital last month.
Various factions, including the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and civil society, are organizing these protests. TMC women members are set to stage demonstrations across different blocks, advocating for harsher penalties for rapists. Concurrently, the BJP continues its sit-in protest at Esplanade that began on August 29, with Union Minister and BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar calling for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation.
The West Bengal government has scheduled a special assembly session on Monday to introduce a bill mandating capital punishment for convicted rapists. Additionally, a 'Maha Michhil' or mega rally, featuring diverse professional groups, is planned from College Square to Esplanade, expected to draw thousands. The Calcutta High Court has directed the CBI to investigate the trainee's alleged rape and murder, which has sparked nationwide outrage.
