A migrant worker from West Bengal was allegedly beaten to death in Haryana's Charkhi Dadri district over suspicion that he had eaten beef, police said on Saturday. Five members of a cow vigilante group have been arrested in connection with the attack.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini described the August 27 incident as 'unfortunate,' but urged against labeling it as mob lynching. 'We have enacted a strict law in the state assembly for the protection of cows and there is no compromise on it,' Saini said.
According to a senior police officer, the victim, identified as Sabir Malik, was in his mid-20s. On the day of the incident, the accused allegedly lured Malik to a shop under the pretence of selling empty plastic bottles and then thrashed him. The accused later moved Malik to another location where they continued the assault, resulting in his death.
Malik, who lived in a shanty near Bandhra village, earned his livelihood by collecting waste and rags. Along with the five adults arrested, two juveniles were also apprehended. A case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) provisions has been registered, and food samples have been sent for testing in Faridabad.
