At least 59 people, including six women and 12 children, have lost their lives in the devastating floods that have affected more than five million people across 11 districts in Bangladesh, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The Disaster Management and Relief Ministry, updating on the flood situation, reported the highest deaths from Cumilla and Feni districts, which border India's Tripura, with 14 and 23 fatalities respectively.
Monsoon rains, along with the effects of El Nino and climate change, have caused extensive floods in deltaic Bangladesh and upstream Indian regions, resulting in human and cattle displacement and loss of property. The floods pose significant administrative challenges to the newly installed interim government amid a political transition.
