In a joint military operation, the United States and Iraq targeted suspected Islamic State militants in Iraq's western desert, leading to the deaths of at least 15 people and injuring seven American troops, officials reported on Saturday.
For years, US forces have combated the Islamic State group after dismantling its self-declared caliphate across Iraq and Syria. However, the casualties from this operation were considerably higher than in previous missions.
The US Central Command stated that the militants were armed with numerous weapons, grenades, and explosive suicide belts during Thursday's raid in the Anbar Desert. Iraqi forces confirmed airstrikes were used, followed by an airborne operation. The US military emphasized that the raid targeted ISIS leaders to disrupt their capacity to plan and execute attacks on Iraqi civilians and international allies. The operation also led to the destruction of hideouts, weapons, and logistical support. Among the deceased were key ISIS leaders, though their identities were not disclosed. US officials revealed five American troops were injured during the raid, with two others sustaining fall injuries.
