Russian forces have secured the Kirove settlement in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region, according to a statement from the defence ministry on Saturday.
Donetsk, one of four regions claimed by Russia despite incomplete control, has its annexation rejected by both Ukraine and Western nations, who deem it illegal. Ukraine has committed to reversing this annexation through military force.
While Russia has been making gradual progress in the region, Ukrainian forces are simultaneously pushing forward in Russia's Kursk region after a surprise border assault that began on August 6.
