The issue of case backlogs in the judiciary was a focal point at the 'National Conference of the District Judiciary', highlighted by Justice Sanjiv Khanna of the Supreme Court. Speaking at the event, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Justice Khanna underscored the crucial role of district courts in alleviating this persistent problem.

Justice Khanna presented data showing significant improvements in case disposal rates since 2018. 'Today, the entire judiciary is faced with the problem of pendency and backlog of cases. Thus, efficient functioning of the district judiciary is crucial to mitigating these challenges,' he stated, adding that civil case disposal rates had risen to 99.61 per cent in 2023.

He also praised the efforts to utilize 'Lok Adalats' and e-courts and stressed the importance of judicial impact assessment in enhancing resources. Other notable attendees, including Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for continued innovation and commitment in the judiciary.
