A civic volunteer of the Kolkata Police was arrested on Saturday for allegedly riding into a barricaded area and injuring a Rabindra Bharati University student holding a demonstration against the rape and murder of a doctor, a senior officer said.

The incident occurred at 2 AM when the civic volunteer, assigned to Sithi Police Station, entered the barricaded area where a night vigil seeking justice for the deceased doctor was being held and hit one of the agitating students, he stated. The student claimed the accused was inebriated when the incident took place on BT Road at Sinthi crossing near the university in the northern part of the city.

Agitated students blocked the arterial road for nearly five hours, alleging that a traffic sergeant helped the civic volunteer escape and demanded punitive action. A senior police officer confirmed that an FIR has been filed, the civic volunteer has been arrested, and legal steps have been initiated. Traffic was normalised on BT Road after the blockade was lifted by the protesters around 8:30 AM, police reported. The students had permission to hold the protest.
