Brazilian Supreme Court Suspends Elon Musk's X Over Legal Dispute
A Brazilian Supreme Court justice has ordered the suspension of Elon Musk's social media platform X in Brazil after Musk refused to name a legal representative in the country. This decision is part of a prolonged conflict over issues of free speech, misinformation, and far-right accounts.
In a significant legal move, a Brazilian Supreme Court justice has ordered the suspension of Elon Musk's social media platform X in Brazil. The decision comes after Musk failed to name a legal representative in the country, escalating a feud over free speech and misinformation.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued a stern warning on Wednesday night, giving Musk a 24-hour deadline to comply. The platform, formerly known as Twitter, hasn't had a legal representative in Brazil since earlier this month. De Moraes announced that X would remain blocked until compliance is achieved.
Brazil represents a crucial market for X, which has been grappling with advertiser losses since Musk acquired the company in 2022. Approximately 40 million Brazilians, or one-fifth of the population, use X monthly, making the suspension a significant event. The clash continues as Musk and the political right in Brazil argue that de Moraes' actions equate to censorship, while supporters of the justice insist his measures are legal and necessary to protect democracy.
