The Trinamool Congress students wing staged demonstrations across several colleges in Kolkata on Friday, demanding amendments to the existing law against rape to ensure that offenders receive capital punishment following a fast track court conviction.

The Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) members also called for a more rapid CBI investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Hospital. 'We demand an amendment to the existing law to ensure that rapists receive capital punishment after a prompt conviction, an issue already emphasized by our leaders, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee,' stated TMCP president Trinankur Bhattacharya.

Bhattacharya highlighted that the demand has intensified following the discovery of the doctor's body in the seminar room of RG Kar Hospital on August 9. He urged the CBI to expedite the investigation into the heinous crime and bring all those involved to justice, delivering closure to the victim's family.
