A 31-year-old truck driver was arrested for allegedly mowing down four men sleeping on a pavement in Shastri Park, officials reported on Friday. The driver, identified as Arjun from Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh, had been absconding since the incident.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Joy Tirkey revealed that during interrogation, Arjun stated he was not under the influence of alcohol, asserting that he is a teetotaller. Arjun claimed he dozed off while driving. The tragic event unfolded around 4:30 am at the Tarbuz market near the Shastri Park metro station. The truck veered onto the central verge and struck five men sleeping on the pavement, resulting in four fatalities.

A Delhi Police team was dispatched to Arjun's native place in Uttar Pradesh's Fatehpur on Tuesday to locate him. Upon questioning the truck's owner, Rahul Singh, authorities discovered that Arjun had been employed for five years. The investigation also found that the truck had five pending challans, with the latest issued in December 2022.
