In a significant move, all block development officers (BDOs) in Sikkim are now appointed to perform the duties of executive magistrates, as per an official notification.

The notification, dated August 22, states that the BDOs will take on specific responsibilities such as swearing or affirming affidavits under section 333 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. They will also issue backward class, income, property, and no landed property certificates.

These executive magistrates will be subjected to the control and direction of the District Magistrate and other authorities as specified by law.
