The Supreme Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to clarify the reasons behind the detention of well-known YouTuber Savukku Shankar, who was taken into custody shortly after being released from multiple criminal cases.
Addressing the issue, the bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud specified that separate and distinct FIRs could not be clubbed together. The Court has adjourned the hearing until September 2, seeking a detailed explanation.
Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing the Tamil Nadu government, was instructed to examine the 15 FIRs involved and provide a report. Savukku Shankar's counsel argued that his client is a victim of the misuse of the Goondas Act. Shankar's initial detention on May 4 was for derogatory remarks against women police officers, compounded by multiple allegations.
