Congress MP Manish Tewari has emphasized the urgent need for deep-seated parliamentary reforms, proposing the inclusion of presiding officers from the apex judiciary on a temporary basis. Tewari argued that the current role of presiding officers underscores a biased nature, necessitating a reevaluation of their elections and selections.
Tewari highlighted that in the UK, the outgoing speaker isn't subject to re-election, which fosters impartiality — a key aspect he believes is missing in the Indian context. He suggested that it's time to consider having judiciary members serve as presiding officers for a specific period, ensuring objectivity in parliamentary proceedings.
His statements arise amidst continuous tensions between the Chair and opposition leaders in Parliament, especially during the last Monsoon session. Tewari warned that ongoing parliamentary disruptions could undermine legislative institutions' relevance in India's democracy, urging the government to facilitate open debates and discussions.
