Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda announced on Friday that an investigation has been launched into the activities at Parappana Agrahara Central prison. This comes after it was revealed that inmates, including actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, were receiving special treatment.

A photograph of Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, who is currently in custody for the Renukaswamy murder case, lounging with three others on the lawns of Bengaluru jail, sparked outrage after it went viral. Darshan was seen holding a cigarette and a coffee mug. Additionally, a video showing Darshan on a video call from the prison has surfaced on social media.

The commissioner stated that three cases have been registered regarding illegal activities at the prison, two against inmates and one against prison officials. These cases are being probed by the Bengaluru South-East division police, with varying ranks of officers overseeing each case.

Dayananda confirmed that court permission has been obtained for the investigation, which has been ongoing for two days. Another photograph has emerged, furthering the probe led by South-East division Deputy Commissioner of Police Sarah Fathima and supervised by Additional Commissioner of Police Raman Gupta. Nine prison officials were suspended after preliminary findings.

Three FIRs, including one against Darshan, were filed under the Prisons Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Following public backlash, a court has approved moving Darshan to a jail in Ballari. Several co-accused also face relocation. Judicial custody for Darshan and 15 others has been extended till September 9.
