West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday reiterated her request to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for stringent central legislation and exemplary punishment for heinous crimes such as rape and murder.
Banerjee highlighted that she had written to Modi previously about the issue, emphasizing the need for mandatory time-bound disposal of rape and murder cases. Her appeal follows the shocking rape and murder of a doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
Addressing the lack of response from the Prime Minister, Banerjee mentioned that she received a generic reply from the Union Women and Child Development minister that didn't adequately address the gravity of the issue. She pointed out the state's efforts, including the approval of 10 exclusive POCSO courts, 88 fast-track special courts, and the functioning of emergency helplines.
