The West Bengal assembly has been convened for a two-day special session starting September 2, with the primary agenda of tabling and passing a Bill aimed at introducing capital punishment for convicted rapists, as announced by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay.
Speaker Biman Banerjee confirmed that the Bill would be discussed on the second day of the special session. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier stated that an amendment to existing laws would be passed to ensure strict penalties for rapists.
This legislative action follows the social and political unrest caused by the recent alleged rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The state's move aims to expedite the justice process as outlined in the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita.
