The Assam Assembly on Thursday passed a bill to repeal the law that registered Muslim marriages and divorces, signaling a significant legal reform.
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan had earlier tabled The Assam Repealing Bill, 2024 to abolish The Assam Moslem Marriages and Divorces Registration Act of 1935.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the government's goal is not only to abolish child marriages but also to remove the Kazi system, bringing Muslim marriage registration under government control. The opposition, however, termed the decision discriminatory and politically motivated.
