The Assam Assembly erupted into chaos on Thursday after BJP MLA Rama Kanta Dewri alleged that women school teachers in Morigaon district were being harassed by 'Bangladeshi Miya Muslims'. This claim drew sharp reactions from opposition MLAs, leading to heated exchanges and a temporary adjournment of the session.
During Question Hour, Dewri was granted permission by Speaker Biswajit Daimary to ask a supplementary question to Education Minister Ranoj Pegu. Dewri claimed, 'The lady teachers in Morigaon face threats by Bangladeshi Miya Muslims,' prompting immediate backlash from opposition lawmakers.
Speaker Daimary repeatedly urged Dewri to focus his question and avoid controversial statements. Despite his attempts, the ruling BJP legislators and opposition members continued to clash. The Speaker eventually adjourned the House for ten minutes. Upon resumption, Dewri further alleged past incidents of forced beef consumption and urged government protection for teachers.
Opposition Leader Debabrata Saikia called for evidence-based discussions, while Minister Pegu clarified that teacher transfers are conducted through an online system without human interference, ensuring fair distribution of teachers across districts.
