Mystery of the Sunken Bayesian: Investigation Deepens
Italian prosecutors are probing the roles of two additional crew members and the captain of the yacht Bayesian following its sudden sinking during a storm off northern Sicily. The ship, owned by British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, went down on Aug. 19, claiming seven lives, including Lynch's. Investigations continue into the cause.
Italian prosecutors are now examining the involvement of two more crew members from the yacht Bayesian, in addition to its captain, concerning the vessel's sinking over a week ago. This information was disclosed by a judicial source on Wednesday. Being under investigation does not imply guilt or guarantee formal charges.
Owned by British tech mogul Mike Lynch, the Bayesian capsized on August 19 during a pre-dawn storm while anchored off northern Sicily, killing Lynch and six others. On Monday, the yacht's 51-year-old captain, James Cutfield, faced an investigation for manslaughter and shipwreck, which he did not respond to during questioning on Tuesday.
The source revealed that ship engineer Tim Parker Eaton and sailor Matthew Griffith are also being investigated, suspected of failing to secure the yacht's engine room and systems, and were on duty the night of the storm respectively. Griffith left Palermo for Nice, while other crew members departed for destinations like Dubai and Istanbul. Detailed investigations, including salvaging the wreck, will take time, said Termini Imerese prosecutors.
