Effective policing, law and order, and stringent measures against crime are crucial for India's path to becoming the world's third-largest economy, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan asserted on Wednesday.

Speaking as the chief guest at the 54th Foundation Day of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), Mohan emphasized the organization's significant contribution to police modernization and upgradation.

BPR&D stands alone as the Central Police Organisation bridging all state and Union territory police forces, fostering excellence through research, training, and capacity building. The home secretary lauded BPR&D's efforts in educating over nine lakh stakeholders across the criminal justice system about new criminal laws.

Mohan underscored the need for contemporary jurisprudence to shed colonial legacies, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Panch Pran, to combat evolving criminal activities effectively.

On July 1, three new laws - The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) - replaced the outdated British-era codes, significantly reforming India's criminal justice system. The event saw the release of a documentary and a special edition of the Indian Police Journal, focusing on these new laws.

The ceremony also honored recipients of the President's Medal for Distinguished and Meritorious Service. The event was attended by numerous high-ranking officials, including Director of the Intelligence Bureau Tapan Kumar Deka and Deputy NSA Pankaj Kumar Singh.

BPR&D Director General Rajeev Kumar Sharma provided an overview of the organization's recent activities and expressed gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his unwavering support.
