Police in Maharashtra's Beed district rescued six cows from an illegal slaughterhouse and apprehended five individuals, an official confirmed on Wednesday. A large quantity of bovine meat was confiscated during the raid at Barabhai Gulli in Ambejogai town on Tuesday.

Authorities found 11 cattle -- including six cows, two calves, two bulls, and a buffalo calf -- destined for illegal slaughter, according to the official. The accused had already slaughtered at least three cows, with 1,200 kg of bovine meat recovered from the premises and sent for chemical analysis.

Ten persons have been charged under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act. The search for additional suspects continues, while the rescued animals have been relocated to a local cow-shelter.
