The Delhi High Court has raised alarms over the growing menace of deepfake technology, asserting that Artificial Intelligence (AI) would be the only effective countermeasure. The court made these observations while hearing petitions concerning the lack of regulatory measures.
Deepfake technology allows for the creation of highly realistic videos, audio, and images that can manipulate viewers by superimposing one person's likeness onto another. This leads to false narratives and potential misinformation.
Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela stated, 'Deepfake is going to be a serious menace in society.' Petitioners, including journalist Rajat Sharma and lawyer Chaitanya Rohilla, stressed the need for government intervention to prevent misuse. The court granted the petitioners two weeks to submit additional suggestions and set the next hearing for October 24.
