The Bombay High Court on Wednesday overturned a lower court's decision to cancel the bail of Amit Palekar, the president of Aam Aadmi Party's Goa unit, in relation to a 2023 road accident that claimed three lives.
Palekar had appealed to the high court after the additional sessions court revoked his bail on August 26, alleging he breached the bail conditions by traveling abroad. However, Justice B P Deshpande found the lower court's judgment to be ''highly obnoxious'' and a result of ''gross non-application of mind.''
The case revolves around an August 6, 2023 incident where a speeding Mercedes on Banastarim bridge led to multiple fatalities. The Crime Branch had arrested Palekar for purportedly tampering with evidence and attempting to produce a decoy driver to shield the actual accused, Paresh Sawardekar.
