The New Zealand Government has introduced a new Employment Action Plan aimed at supporting more people into work, enabling them to lead happier, healthier, and more productive lives. Social Development and Employment Minister Louise Upston emphasized that a well-functioning labour market is crucial for strengthening the economy and providing New Zealanders with greater opportunities to reach their full potential.

"The Employment Action Plan outlines how we will support individuals facing various challenges to contribute to the economy and improve labour market outcomes," Minister Upston said. "It ensures that our welfare, employment, education, and immigration systems are all working in harmony to equip New Zealanders with the skills needed to secure jobs and meet the workforce demands of our industries and communities."

The Plan focuses on three key objectives:

Swift Workforce Integration: Helping people find work quickly and maintain employment, thereby minimizing the negative effects of job loss and prolonged benefit dependency on both individuals and the economy.

Skills Development: Supporting individuals in acquiring the skills necessary for workplace success, increasing their earning potential, reducing the number of people relying on benefits, and promoting continuous upskilling.

Enhanced Employment Access: Improving employers’ access to skilled workers, enabling employees and students to make informed decisions about investing in their skills.

The Employment Action Plan encompasses 12 actions across various portfolios, including Social Development and Employment, Immigration, Education, Tertiary Education and Skills, and Regional Development. The Plan replaces the previous government's strategy and seven separate employment plans that were held by different agencies, which Minister Upston noted had made collaboration challenging and diluted focus.

"By rebuilding the economy, enhancing public services, and providing more educational and employment opportunities, we are laying the groundwork for New Zealanders to thrive now and in the future," Minister Upston concluded.
