Prosecutors in Italy have launched an investigation into the captain of a superyacht that sank during a storm off Sicily last week, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals, Italian media reported Monday.

James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealand national, is under scrutiny for potential manslaughter and culpable shipwreck charges, though being investigated does not imply guilt or criminal charges according to Italian law.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio confirmed the investigation but noted no suspect had been identified yet. The investigation will consider all possible elements of responsibility, including those of the captain, crew, supervisory individuals, and the yacht's manufacturer.
