A 41-year-old man accused of raping a seven-year-old girl was re-arrested after escaping police custody and suffering a gunshot wound to his leg, officials reported on Monday.

The accused managed to flee while being transported for a medical check-up on Sunday, police said.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Deependra Nath Chaudhary, the man sexually assaulted the girl when she went to buy milk from a local shop. He was initially arrested, but later that night, he claimed to be feeling unwell and escaped while being taken to a hospital.

The police quickly formed three teams to track him down. He was located in the Sonu Ghat area, where an encounter took place, resulting in the accused being shot in the leg, ASP Chaudhary stated.

Following his re-arrest, the accused was admitted to Maharishi Devaraha Baba Medical College for medical treatment. Authorities are continuing legal proceedings against him.
