Tragic Flash Flood Claims Life as Rescue Efforts Continue Near Grand Canyon

A tragic incident unfolded near the Grand Canyon as the body of Chenoa Nickerson, 33, was discovered after she had been missing for three days. Nickerson was swept into Havasu Creek during a flash flood and was found downstream on Sunday, according to the U.S. National Park Service.

Nickerson, hailing from Gilbert, Phoenix, had entered the creek without a life jacket. The dangerous waters of Havasu Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River, eventually carried her away. An extensive search operation ensued, focusing on the confluence of Havasu Creek and the Colorado River.

The Arizona National Guard and state resources, including a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter, were activated for the rescue mission. The Havasupai Tribal Council has since closed tourist access to their lands in response to the severe flooding.
