A 26-year-old Syrian man is in German police custody following a stabbing rampage in Solingen that left three dead and eight injured. Authorities on Sunday confirmed they are investigating his possible links to Islamic State as the militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.
The incident took place during a festival in a market square on Friday evening, celebrating Solingen's 650-year history. A makeshift memorial has been set up by mourners near the scene. The suspect surrendered himself on Saturday, admitting to the crime, according to a joint statement from Duesseldorf police and prosecutors on Sunday.
Identified by federal prosecutors as Issa Al H., the suspect is believed to be a member of Islamic State motivated by radical Islamist beliefs to kill non-believers. Politicians are calling for enhanced security measures, including tighter weapon controls and stricter immigration policies.
