China's coast guard on Sunday reported a light collision involving a Philippine vessel in the disputed South China Sea. The clash, which both sides blame on each other, underscores rising tensions in the region.

According to coast guard spokesperson Gan Yu, the Philippine ship entered waters around Sabina Shoal, known in Chinese as Xianbin Reef, and ignored warnings from the Chinese vessel, resulting in a collision. Gan accused the Philippines of provocations and warned of further consequences. He added that the Philippine vessel was carrying journalists who allegedly distorted facts about the incident.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in the Philippines stated that its vessel faced aggressive maneuvers by eight Chinese maritime vessels while on a humanitarian mission to supply Filipino fishermen. This incident marks a broader conflict as China continues its expansive territorial claims in the South China Sea, involving multiple claimant countries including Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Brunei.

Days prior, another collision occurred near Sabina Shoal, damaging two vessels but causing no injuries. Despite an agreement between China and the Philippines to avoid confrontations at Second Thomas Shoal, tensions remain high.
