A 26-year-old man has confessed to a stabbing spree in Solingen, Germany, that left three people dead and eight others injured, authorities announced early Sunday.

"The involvement of this person is currently under intensive investigation," Duesseldorf police and federal prosecutors said in a joint statement. This follows an earlier announcement by a state official who revealed the suspect's arrest on German television late Saturday.

The attack, for which the Islamic State group claimed responsibility, happened on Friday evening during a festival celebrating Solingen's 650-year history. Der Spiegel reported, citing unnamed security sources, that the suspect was a Syrian national and his clothes were stained with blood.

Police did not comment on the Spiegel report.
