The Odisha Police are intensifying their crackdown on the illegal liquor trade following the tragic deaths of two individuals in Ganjam district due to spurious liquor consumption.
On Friday, authorities arrested Rajendra Sahu, also known as Juria (65), for allegedly selling illegal country-made liquor in the Chikiti area. This brings the total number of arrests to seven, along with the destruction of large quantities of molasses in K.Nuagaon and Digapahandi police station limits, according to SP (Berhampur) Sarthak Sarangi.
The excise personnel have separately arrested two other suspects. Many of those arrested, including Juria, are repeat offenders who resumed their illegal liquor business after being released on bail. Despite previous arrests, they considered the illegal trade lucrative, noted a senior police officer. SP Sarangi reaffirmed ongoing raids to capture all individuals involved in the hooch tragedy.
As of now, 13 people are still receiving treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital after consuming the toxic liquor.
