The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday defended in the Supreme Court its decision to arrest Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, asserting that his detention was essential due to his evasive and non-cooperative responses during inquiries about his involvement in the purported excise policy scandal.

In a comprehensive affidavit responding to Kejriwal's challenge against his arrest, the CBI revealed it apprehended the AAP leader after interrogating him on June 25, 2024. The agency stated this measure was crucial to confront him with existing evidence, particularly since he actively attempted to derail the investigation. The necessity of the arrest was underscored by materials on record and Kejriwal's uncooperative stance during questioning.

A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan documented the CBI's affidavit and scheduled further hearings for September 5. The CBI mentioned that despite Kejriwal holding no ministerial office, he was pivotal in the excise policy's formulation alongside the then Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. On August 14, the Supreme Court declined interim bail for Kejriwal, directing the CBI to respond to his arrest challenge plea.
