The NATO air base in Geilenkirchen, Germany, has increased its security level due to intelligence reports suggesting a possible threat. As a precautionary measure, all non-mission essential staff have been sent home.
A spokesperson confirmed the threat level was raised to Charlie, the second-highest alert level, indicating a high likelihood of terrorist action against NATO personnel or facilities. This marks the second instance of heightened security at the base recently, following an incident last week in Cologne where the water supply was investigated for sabotage.
Moreover, on the same day, an attempted trespassing incident led to a complete sweep of the Geilenkirchen premises. The German military later confirmed the water in Cologne was not contaminated. NATO has previously warned about acts of sabotage and cyberattacks, often attributed to Russian activities.
