Taliban Appoints First Accredited Ambassador to UAE
Afghanistan's Taliban-led foreign ministry has appointed its first accredited ambassador to the United Arab Emirates with Mawlawi Badreddin Haqqani nominated for the role. China and the UAE are the only countries to accept envoys at this level. Official recognition by most countries remains pending due to human rights concerns.
Afghanistan's Taliban-led foreign ministry announced the appointment of its first accredited ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. Mawlawi Badreddin Haqqani has been nominated for the role and has presented his credentials to the UAE's foreign ministry's assistant undersecretary for protocol affairs.
This marks the second country, after China, to accept an ambassador from the Taliban-led government. The UAE foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this development. Despite these appointments, the Taliban's government has yet to receive official recognition from any foreign capital, including Beijing.
Diplomats and analysts suggest that this move could indicate upgraded ties, albeit in a grey area of international diplomacy. Many Western nations, including the United States, have maintained that formal recognition is contingent on changes to the Taliban's policies on women's rights and education.
