Bangladesh to Sign International Convention Against Enforced Disappearances

Bangladesh's interim government is preparing to sign the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, a move announced by a top official on Wednesday.

The government is contemplating the formation of a commission to investigate forced disappearances during the ousted Sheikh Hasina government's rule. About 700 people disappeared during her tenure, with around 150 still missing, according to the Chief Adviser's press secretary, Shafiqul Alam, who spoke at the Foreign Service Academy.

The signing of the convention may take place before August 30, aligning with the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances. The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus as Chief Adviser, is committed to probing each case of enforced disappearance and might try those responsible in the International Crimes Tribunal.
