In response to the Badlapur sexual assault incident, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, stated on Wednesday that the event compels societal introspection regarding women's safety. He called for collective action from all governments and parties to brainstorm solutions for creating a safer environment for women.

Tuesday saw massive protests in Badlapur, Thane district, where the public blocked railway tracks and ransacked a school following the horrific sexual abuse of two kindergarten girls by an attendant. The delayed response from authorities sparked widespread outrage.

In a post in Hindi on platform X, Gandhi highlighted the recurrence of such crimes in Maharashtra, drawing parallels to similar incidents in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. He criticized the systemic delays that impede justice and embolden criminals, urging for a serious reevaluation of how crimes against women are handled.

Gandhi condemned the practice of evading FIR registrations, which he argued both demoralizes victims and empowers offenders. He stressed the necessity for all societal segments, including government, citizens, and political parties, to take concrete steps toward securing a safe environment for women.

The arrested accused faces calls for stringent punishment, with opposition parties decrying the 11-hour delay the victims' parents endured before their complaints were acknowledged at the Badlapur police station.
