A migrant boy from southern Mexico was killed, and eight others were injured when unknown assailants fired on their vehicle in Sonora, northern Mexico. The victims included people from Mexico, Ecuador, and Africa. The area is plagued by violence from gangs of migrant smugglers linked to drug cartels.

A tragic incident in northern Mexico left one migrant dead and eight others wounded when unidentified attackers opened fire on their vehicle, officials reported on Monday.
The deceased migrant was a boy hailing from southern Mexico, while the injured included individuals from Mexico, Ecuador, and Africa.
The assault occurred on Sunday in Tubutama, a township around 47 miles south of Sasabe, along the Arizona border, according to Sonoran prosecutors. While no motive was disclosed, the region is notorious for clashes between rival gangs of migrant smugglers associated with drug cartels.
Migrant smugglers often face violence from cartels demanding fees for safe passage through their territories, with attacks sometimes occurring when payments fall short.
