The alleged rape-murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has thrown the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) into turmoil, exposing a rift over how to address the incident and subsequent protests.
Internal conflict within the TMC has emerged, with senior leaders criticizing the state's response as slow and ineffective. Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, a TMC MP, strongly condemned the crime and demanded custodial interrogation of the Kolkata Police Commissioner and the former principal of RG Kar Medical College.
Protests across West Bengal show no signs of abating, as healthcare services remain crippled due to a strike by junior doctors demanding justice for their colleague. Emergency and outpatient departments in most state-run hospitals are still closed, causing significant distress among patients.
