Puntland Executes 10 Al Shabaab Fighters Following Military Trial
Puntland, a semi-autonomous state in Somalia, executed ten al Shabaab fighters following a military trial in Galkayo. Sentenced to death for involvement in assassinations and bombings, the executions aim to curb the militant group's nearly two-decade insurgency against Somalia's central government.
Puntland, a semi-autonomous state in Somalia, executed ten fighters from the Islamist militant group al Shabaab on Saturday. The region's police confirmed in a statement that the executions, carried out by firing squad in Galkayo's Mudug region, followed a military court trial where the militants were sentenced to death for their roles in assassinations and bombings across Galkayo.
The police stated that the executed fighters, previously sentenced to death by the supreme court of the armed forces, were found guilty of committing murders in the city of Galkayo. Al Shabaab, an insurgent group linked to al Qaeda, has been striving for nearly two decades to overthrow Somalia's central government and impose their strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.
The executions are part of ongoing efforts to suppress the influence and operations of al Shabaab in the region, as the Somali government and its allies continue to confront the persistent threat from the militant organization.
