The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC), under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), has proudly received the prestigious Oeko-Tex certification for its Eri Silk on the occasion of India's 78th Independence Day. This significant achievement elevates the traditional craftsmanship of the region and positions Eri Silk as a globally recognized, sustainable textile.

Eri Silk, known as the world's only vegan silk, is celebrated for its ethical production process, where the moth naturally exits the cocoon without being harmed. This compassionate and eco-friendly approach distinguishes Eri Silk as a symbol of sustainability in the textile industry.

The Oeko-Tex certification, a rigorous standard from Germany that ensures textiles are free from harmful substances and produced under environmentally friendly conditions, is a significant endorsement for Eri Silk. This certification also strengthens the silk's status as a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Assam, underscoring its authenticity and regional significance.

This milestone opens new opportunities for Eri Silk in the global export market, enhancing its international presence and showcasing Assam's rich cultural heritage. The achievement highlights NEHHDC's commitment to promoting sustainable practices while preserving the region's traditional craftsmanship.

Union Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia, congratulated the NEHHDC team on Twitter for this remarkable accomplishment, further acknowledging the region's potential in contributing to the global textile industry.
